Birthdays in Heaven

Emilia’s First Birthday in Heaven

One year ago today, I was forced to fit an entire lifetime of love and memories into a mere 52 hours with my daughter, Emilia.  We managed to say hello and goodbye all in that short amount of time.  Emilia's life may have ended in tragedy, but what survived is…

Pain

Why does it feel like such a lonely journey?

My heart has been heavy these last few days.  With Emilia’s Birthday just around the corner, it is only natural that memories of her fill my days a little bit more than usual.  Over this past year, I have learned that my journey is far from solitary, even though at…

Pregnancy After Loss

Two extra stockings, hung with care

[caption id="attachment_2089" align="aligncenter" width="698"] Baby Clough #3 - Due August 2018[/caption]   As we hang our stockings this year, our mantle looks a bit different than one would expect.  One new stocking hangs in memory of our angel Emilia, and the other in celebration of a new life that has…

Capture Your Grief – 2017

In October of 2012, a perinatal advocate named CarlyMarie created CAPTURE YOUR GRIEF.  This project was made to coincide with National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month, which is embraced and celebrated during the entire month of October of every year.  The event was a beautiful success with over 2,000 people…

The DAISY Award

All of us have at one point in our lives been touched by the compassion and generosity of another person.  Sometimes it is when we least expect it and need help and kindness the most.  When my family was in the hospital for the birth and recovery of our stillborn…

Heart-Wrenching Pain

I go to bed every night asking myself “How are you still going?” Plenty of days I feel like my heart will stop beating.  I can’t handle the grief anymore and my body just wants to give out from all the pain and sadness.  I have lost my purpose in…

KC Hope

Picture of Grief

I have been incredibly blessed to have found a supportive community of other mothers who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss.  These women get it and they understand me.  I found KC Hope just three weeks after Emilia died.  KC Hope is a Kansas City Northland based support group designed for both…

Memorial

Stars of Remembrance

I use just about every excuse I can to honor Emilia and to show the world how much love I hold in my heart for her.  The love is overflowing! My struggle at this point is finding a place to pour all of this love into.  With Adelaide (my…

“How many children do you have?”

"How many children do you have?" Such a basic and straight-forward question.   Do I deflect and reply with a lie? Or answer honestly and wait for the awkward silence to pass while the stranger stumbles to attempt an awkward apology? Before having Emilia, I would have never had to…

Signs

Feathers, A Sweet Gift From Heaven

This afternoon, our little family went to our hospital's Infant Loss Garden to remember and reflect on Emilia's short life.  Dan and I sat on a bench, while Adelaide played around the garden.  She eventually brought us a feather and continued to play.  At the moment I didn't think much…
